Z is for Zora Neale Hurston

Some books you read and forget as soon as you close the back cover. Others, like Their Eyes Were Watching God, resonant and stay with you forever. I first encountered Zora Neale Hurston in college and then I read everything that I could find by her and about her. In Their Eyes, she writes with passion, insight, and expansive humanity. She wrote, “There are years that ask questions, and years that answer them.” Stunning. I find myself now in a year that is asking many questions, “Should we move to a different school district? Can I continue to teach fulltime and work on my degree? Will I ever finish grad school? What will my dissertation proposal look like? Can I do this?” It’s so comforting to know that I can always return to Zora.
