B is for BODIES

I have yet to visit BODIES: The Exhibition. I wonder if being the hypothetical spectator has affected how I have composed this learning activity.

Trip to BODIES: The Exhibition

Under permission of the school’s administration, students will travel to BODIES: The Exhibition, a museum that displays preserved, deceased humans who have given their bodies to science. Bringing students to this museum intends to have them consider how, beyond imposed social constructs, human beings biologically and emotionally resemble each other. (Further in the school year, students will explore how social constructs change human beings but, for this particular unit, fostering a humanistic understanding holds fundamental primacy.) The physical, visual, and emotional engagement with these exhibitions will potentially foster a deeper understanding of what it means to be human in lieu of nearly reading a textbook on human physiology. Students will reflect upon the following questions during their experience therein and thereafter:

  1. When you saw the first exhibition, particularly since this individual once lived, how did you physically and emotionally feel?
  2. What notably captured your attention while observing these exhibitions?
  3. How might visiting BODIES together as a class affected you in lieu of individually going thereto?
  4. To what extent, after viewing these exhibitions, do you think human beings resemble and differ from each other?
  5. How does your experience at BODIES inform your developing philosophy of subjectivity?

These questions aim to have students develop a deeper understanding of the strinkingly familiar biological and emotional patterns human beings have: Students will consider how these observations affect their understanding of subjectivity. Furthermore, subsequent to visiting BODIES: The Exhibition, the educator will assign a 3-4 page composition that requires students to analyze how their understanding of subjectivity is developing and changing (or not), using specific examples from their experience at this museum.
