A is for Artist

| March 4, 2014

Is an artist an artist if/when s/he is not creating art? When s/he is not making art, should we define this period as stagnant? Or is it more a gestation period during which some embryo is forming internally, unseen– for now? As a writer, I can write pages of horribly written prose or poetry that I will never share with the outside world. Does that make me an artist just because I’m creating something tangible, no matter how awful it is? Furthermore, if an artist is creating art without sharing it with the outside world, is s/he an artist? To me, art is meant to be shared. (Perhaps this is all a justification of my own creative stasis!)
