Y is for “You’re better off reading”

My friend Chloe Shaw recently posted this image on Instagram. I thought this TV cover was a rather brilliant reminder to pick up a book rather than flick on our flatscreen. While I know that everyone seems to adore ¬†television series such as “Game of Thrones” and “Orange Is the New Black,” and countless others, I am hesitant to get sucked into these shows because I already find that I spend too much time on my iPhone. Perhaps I should make a smaller version of this “Read” cover for my iPhone. In any case, TV series these days seem to resemble a tube of Pringles, once you consume one episode, you are so hooked that you must devour the next one. TV writers, these days especially, know just the right ingredients to cultivate our addiction. In this way they are not unlike the “taste scientists” behind junk food. Lena Dunham (ironically one of these TV writers) said recently, “Let’s be reasonable and add an¬†eighth day to the week that is devoted exclusively to reading.” Our addiction to our screens leaves us so little time for reading that perhaps we will have to adopt extreme measures in order to preserve the role of reading in our lives.
