Y is for Yard

Yards have been used as a way of entertainment in modern times. Yards are the places where we can spend relaxing moments with family members and friends. Moreover, yards have recorded great memories for children during their childhood years. However, Chinese classical yards embody the aesthetic charactertics of the “Chinese seclusion culture” besides their social functional and ornamental values. In ancient times, only people who are politically powerful or wealthy had their own yards, so yards were served as their private spaces. Due to the numerous pressures and complication from social society, people had strong desires to build up pure lands in their hearts. The yards make a separation between outside world and inside world.  The yards reflect the pursuit of seclusion and inner happiness. In addition, the existence of Chinese classical yards met the needs of this group of people who hope to obtain spiritual peace and freedom.
